Goa Election Opinion & Exit Polls 2022
The elections in Goa have always been interesting, even though the state is small. Despite Congress being the largest party within the hung assembly, the Bhartiya Janta Party formed the government in the last election. Even after losing its stalwart Manohar Parrikar, the BJP could run the government successfully. Unlike the Congress, which appears to be divided in Goa, the BJP appears to be united. There will be the first time in the history of the BJP that the elections will be held without Parrikar.
Despite its unsuccessful election campaign, the Aam Aadmi Party is also expanding in the state. Furthermore, regional parties are also capable of emerging as kingmakers and taking the big political parties by surprise. As the current government’s term ends on March 15, 2022, the fate of the 40 member assembly will be decided in February-March. Who are the voters thinking of? The Congress, BJP, or a third party? Goa Election Live Counting 2022
Final figures are expected to exceed 80%, with postal ballots still to come in for the assembly elections. The final figure given by officials for the assembly elections was 78.94%. As well as the opposition Congress, the ruling BJP facing a recurrence of defections to its side and the ruling BJP facing a rising anti-incumbency sentiment, both parties said a high voter turnout would be a key factor in their campaigns for power. It was a very tight race between the BJP and the opposition. It won only 13 of the 40 seats in the 40-member assembly. With only a little more than one per cent of the votes, Congress received 17 seats. Eventually, with the help of smaller parties, the BJP put together a government. There was a tenuous hold on the National Assembly until 2019, when defections from Congress gave the BJP a stronger hand.
In this election, 9 lakh voters out of the total of 11.64 lakh voted. The number of votes for the opposition is high, which indicates that a mandate is going against the ruling party. MoneyControl spoke with Carlos Almeida Coutinho, a prominent political observer, lawyer and former student activist who told the publication that it is not so simple as that. Mostly because Goa has reported high voter turnout in three elections now. In 2017, we reported 82.56 %, and in 2012, we reported 83.94 %. The voting percentages in the two previous elections had been closer to the 70-per cent mark in both 2007 and 2002.
